Most holiday cottages described as "near the Essex coast" are actually on the coast, which sounds appealing until you arrive in February and find that half the town has closed for the season. Colchester and Wivenhoe offer something more practical: proper towns with year-round restaurants, pubs, and things to do in the evening, each within 15 to 30 minutes of the coast by car. You get the beach when you want it and a real place to come back to when you are done.
Clever Cottages has four two-bedroom properties across both towns, all dog-friendly, all with free parking, and all close enough to the Essex coast that a day trip barely registers as a drive.
The Coast from Your Door
The Essex coastline runs for over 350 miles, and the stretch accessible from Colchester and Wivenhoe is one of the most varied in the county. You are not limited to a single beach or a single resort. From any of our four properties, you have several distinct coastal destinations within easy reach, each with its own character and reason to visit.
West Mersea is the closest, roughly 9 miles from Colchester and about 15 minutes in the car. It is the place to go for oysters and seafood, for the beach huts, and for the particular atmosphere of a working fishing village that happens to welcome visitors without entirely rearranging itself for them. The beach is dog-friendly, the seafood restaurants are good, and the whole island has a pace that rewards an afternoon without a plan. Check the tides before you go, because on a very high tide West Mersea becomes an island and the road floods briefly at the Strood.
Brightlingsea sits about 15 miles away, a 20-minute drive, and in summer you can reach it from Wivenhoe without a car at all by taking the Wivenhoe Ferry across the estuary. It is a sailing town with an open-air lido that has been running since the 1930s, a 50-metre outdoor pool right on the coast that is worth the visit on its own. Brightlingsea tends to attract a slightly quieter crowd than the bigger resorts, which is part of the appeal.
Walton-on-the-Naze is 17 miles from Colchester, roughly 25 minutes by car. The Naze Tower is the draw here, a landmark you can climb for the views, with a cafe at the bottom and a genuinely interesting coastal erosion story if you walk the cliffs. The beach is long and sandy, and the town is traditional seaside without being self-conscious about it. Frinton-on-Sea is nearby, a little quieter, a little more composed, worth combining into the same trip if you have the time. Clacton-on-Sea is about 20 miles out, the full-scale traditional British seaside experience, and unapologetic about it.
If you are staying in Wivenhoe, you are also just a short walk from the River Colne, which is not the sea but carries its own appeal, particularly on a summer evening when the boats are in and the light is doing something worth sitting still for.
Four Cottages, Two Towns
Secret Cottage and Queens Cottage, Wivenhoe
The two Wivenhoe properties sit in a small town on the River Colne that manages to feel like a village despite having everything you need within walking distance. The river, the pubs, the train station for London, the monthly market, the Art Trail twice a year, all of it is on your doorstep without needing to drive anywhere. Both cottages are Victorian terraces, carefully decorated with themed interiors, and stocked with everything from kitchen equipment to welcome snacks and a few things for the first morning. Wivenhoe is the choice if you want a quieter pace with a strong sense of place, and the coast is 15 to 20 minutes away when you want a change of scenery.
There is more on what to do in Wivenhoe if you want to plan your days around the town rather than the coast.
Number 11 and The Round House, Colchester
The two Colchester properties are a short walk from the centre of Britain's oldest recorded town, which tends to deliver more than first-time visitors expect. Colchester Castle, the Roman walls, the Dutch Quarter, the independent shops along Eld Lane, the Mercury Theatre, live music at The Art Centre, and a range of restaurants and pubs that means you will not run out of evening options even on a longer stay. Both properties have free parking and are well positioned for the coast, with West Mersea the easiest day trip at about 15 minutes in the car.
What You Will Find on Arrival
All four Clever Cottages properties share the same approach: self-check-in from 3pm, so there is no waiting around or coordinating with anyone. The key safe code and all arrival details are sent well before you get there. Free parking is available at every property.
Inside, you will find teas, coffees, fresh milk, and a few welcome snacks. The kitchen is fully equipped if you want to cook. The beds have 100% cotton sheets, and Kate puts chocolates on the pillows, a bottle of water in the fridge, and extra blankets in case you need them. There is even a spare toothbrush and toothpaste, because someone always forgets. A comprehensive property guidebook covers everything from the WiFi password to local recommendations, and if anything is not right, Kate responds to messages promptly.
All four properties are dog-friendly, which matters more than it might seem when you are planning a coastal trip with a dog. Too many "pet-friendly" listings come with reluctance or restrictions that make you feel like you are doing something wrong by bringing your dog. Here, dogs are genuinely welcome. Just get in touch about the house rules before your stay.
One thing to note: the stairs in all our properties are steep, as you would expect in a Victorian terrace. They may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues or very young children.
Why Stay Inland
There is a reason the big cottage platforms fill their Essex coastal results with properties directly on the seafront, and it is not because those are the best places to stay. Coastal towns in Essex are often seasonal, with restaurants closing outside summer, limited evening options, and a quietness in the off-season that borders on emptiness. Colchester and Wivenhoe are year-round places with their own reason to visit, quite apart from the coast.
Staying in Colchester or Wivenhoe and treating the coast as a day trip gives you the best of both. You get the beach, the seafood, the sea air, and then you come back to a town that has not shut up shop for the night. If you book directly through our website, you skip the platform fee and have Kate's direct contact from the start. Same cottages, same welcome, less paperwork.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far are your cottages from the Essex coast?
The nearest coast is West Mersea, about 9 miles from Colchester and 15 minutes by car. Brightlingsea is about 20 minutes, Walton-on-the-Naze roughly 25, and Clacton-on-Sea not much further. From Wivenhoe, you can take the ferry to Brightlingsea in summer without needing a car.
Are your properties dog-friendly?
All four Clever Cottages properties welcome dogs. We ask that you let us know when you book so we can share the house rules beforehand. The Essex coast has several dog-friendly beaches, and both Wivenhoe and Colchester have good walks if you want a day closer to home.
Is there parking at your properties?
Every Clever Cottages property has free parking, which is useful if you are planning day trips to the coast. There is no permit system or additional charge.
What is there to do in the evenings near your cottages?
Colchester has a range of restaurants, pubs, a theatre, live music venues, and a cinema. Wivenhoe has several pubs and restaurants within walking distance of both cottages, including The Greyhound and The Olive Branch. Neither town goes quiet in the evening the way a coastal village might.
Can I book directly?
Booking directly through the Clever Cottages website means you skip the platform fee that Airbnb and Booking.com add on top, and you get Kate's direct number from the start of your stay.
