We thought that the area was lovely and relaxing. The house was clean and quite well equipped. We did not feel that it was a 'cottage' but a two up two down… We thought that the area was lovely and relaxing. The house was clean and quite well equipped.

We did not feel that it was a 'cottage' but a two up two down terraced house. It was rather gloomy and cramped, and we had people passing by in the backyard and at the front of the terraced house. Also, a dishwasher with more cutlery would have helped. We did not feel it was that 'quiet' either, so the property failed to meet our expectations, and we would not stay here again.

It was a lovely little cottage that was well stocked with everything we needed. It was comfortable and near to the river and the lovely Wivenhoe. Only downside - the soft beds. I like a firm mattress and neither of the beds was that. That is the only reason I didnt give 10 stars across the board.

The cottage was a good base from which to visit Mersea and see family north of Colchester.

The hosts were very helpful when I contacted them. The cottage must have an interesting history. It was very clean and smelt fresh on arrival. It suited our needs for our visit to this part of the country.

You have to go along a narrow gravel path to access the cottage. There is no road access. As ever that type of lock box was difficult to use. The cottage was cosy and would have been a tight squeeze for four adults. The stairs were very steep and narrow. Unfortunately the cottage outbuildings viewed from the kitchen window were not well maintained and appeared unattractive. I would have liked clean teapots and frying pan.

Fabulous mini Co-op at the top of the road for anything you might have forgotten or wasn’t available at the cottage. The cottage had tinned foil and cling film for sandwiches which we loved.

Secret Cottage is a pretty well equiped cottage however the cottage was incredibly cold when we arrived as the heating had been set to 5 degrees centigrade. We assume this was because there hadn't been any guests for some days and the heating had been kept at a frost setting. However as it was known that we would be arriving at or soon after 3pm on a cold winter's day the heating should have been on or at least set to a reasonable temperature. The house was made even colder by the fact that the two back facing windows on the first floor (bathroom and second bedroom) could not be closed because the handles were broken. This made what could have been a very happy experience in a delightful setting a rather cold one. Read more

It was extremely cold when we arrived, and there was no heating on, although it didn't take too long to heat up.
I'm not sure if it was the beds or floor boards, but one or the other was noisy when you moved!

Very difficult to see the small numbers on key lock.Dark approach on lane, with "sleepers" jutting into lane. Need own torch for approach. Parking on street UNRELIABLE , we had to search for a space, often far away from entrance.
The stairs are challenging/ similar to those on ferries. Steep ,high rise. Manageable , just need to be wary.
Radiator in bathroom air locked.
Window in bathroom and back bedroom did not close fully.
Noise in bedroom if heating system was on.
No instructions for use of fire in living room.
We did not make conntact with owners on these issues, they did not interfere with us hugely.

The stairs were very steep and the shower pressure was a little low but that is understandable for the age and build of the cottage. The mattress and bedding was very comfortable however the wooden bed frame was a little creaky when repositioning in the night. But all is all the cottage is very comfortable.

A lovely characterful tucked away cottage just a short walk from the nearby local shops, cafes, restaurants and Quay. The cottage was cute and cosy during a showery weekend, and the tasty… A lovely characterful tucked away cottage just a short walk from the nearby local shops, cafes, restaurants and Quay. The cottage was cute and cosy during a showery weekend, and the tasty treats left for us on arrival were welcome! Clean, with tasteful calming decor, which made us feel at home rather than a rental.
The downstairs is compact but we managed to fit 4 adults and a baby in for a few days! The bedrooms were more spacious, so room for baby cot by bed in main front bedroom.
Wivenhoe is quaint and small enough to explore easily - ideal short or long weekend. We enjoyed coffee and cake at a few different cafes, and a tapas meal one evening, also nice walking along Quayside where lots of residential development and regeneration has taken place. Good base for walks further along the estuary and lovely sunsets/views with photo opportunities.
Do note the internal stairs are steep, there is a communal narrow gravel footpath to get to cottage, and there is also a big step down to pavement which means you need to lift a buggy down, and so it would not be level accessible for people with very limited mobility. We were aware and had enough mobility/capacity to plan round this, but it could be difficult with fewer pairs of hands!
Overall a lovely stay and we would return :) Read more

It's in a great location, just a short walk from the train station, and Wivenhoe has some interesting book shops, a gallery, a pretty quayside and a good selection of pubs/eateries.
We were given clear instructions by the hosts on how to reach the cottage and access the key. We were also greeted by a very welcome drink and nibbles on our arrival!
We came from London by train and found visiting the coast (we went to Brightlingsea and Mersea Island) and Colchester very easy to reach by public transport. However if visiting Beth Chatto Gardens (highly recommended) we found taking a taxi (under 10 mins) far easier. (You have to take 2 buses and we had a problem with one of the buses not turning up.... so ended up at the bus stop for an hour! After this we taxi'd back to Secret Cottage in style!)
All in all a lovely, relaxing time at the cottage and a great stay in an interesting area. Thankyou! Read more

Just be careful not to drop tiny items as the floorboards have gaps in places and my mother in laws silver necklace slid down the gap! Beautiful bathroom, love the floor tiles. Providing toiletries was a helpful touch too. So nice to find a bathmat!! The stairs are little steep but take your time and it s fine. Kitchen was very well equipped and tea coffee milk inc soya) salt pepper being provided is great. Lovely to leave snacks and bubbly too! I liked the guest book and suggestion book together with the info pack, very helpful. Recycling and rubbish is well organised outside too. Not sure if little green food caddy was missing or just not used.
It was a short walk along the alleyway to the car where you can park along the road. It was dark along there after 4:30ish but sensor lights turned on as we went plus we used light on our phone! Seating out front was lovely but it was raining so we didnt use it. We walked to the Black Bouy pub twice, very good food. Buses and the train are nearby if you dont use a car. The Quay is wonderful to walk along too. All in all a great place to stay. Read more

Cottage is compact but has all you need for a great stay. Very near centre of village with great Tapas restaurant, bakery, bookshop and beer shop. Other shops too but none we used. Near train station so easy and cheap to get into Colchester to visit the many things to see there. We visited beaches, the zoo, Colchester , took long walks along the river and used the little ferry over the river. The cottage is in a great position, very close to three pubs and a super Tapas restaurant. The railway station is also only about a 10 min stroll, lots of daily trains meant days out without the car something to enjoy. We walked the Wivenhoe trail, this gave us the much needed exercise we needed after eating some lovely meals in the friendly local pubs. The location was perfect for us, the cottage was extremely well presented and clean it served its purpose very well, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will certainly be using it again when we visit our family again down in Colchester.
Only minor gripe we had was the mattress in the main room, we could feel the springs through it each night and woke up each morning in a little discomfort, but it wasn’t enough to put us off using this beautiful cottage in a lovely charming location.

Kate's cosy cottage is delightful and comfortable, and located in a great setting close to the amenities and a short walk from the river in Wivenhoe. The upstairs bedrooms are light and airy. It's a quiet location, although you can hear sounds from the neighbours through the walls as you often can in a terrace, and it wasn't a problem. The kitchen had everything we needed, and Kate had kindly left some basics and a bottle of Cava which was a lovely touch. The sitting room is comfortable and everywhere was freshly decorated.
We went to the Wivenhoe deli where you can buy some delicious cheeses and other yummy treats. The Rose and Crown had just opened, and was not busy, although we didn't have time to pop in on this visit. Everyone in Wivenhoe is friendly as ever, and are taking the distancing thing in their stride. I can highly recommend staying at Kate's cottage. Read more

The cottage is immaculate and some lovely touches eg bottle of fizz waiting for us in the fridge and breakfast ( croissants , eggs , orange juice , butter jams and milk ) also tea and coffee .
Upstairs 2 good sized Double bedrooms, decorated lovely and beds really comfortable and a well presented bathroom . I like that you are provided with shampoos, conditioners , body wash and even toothbrushes ( which was handy as my sister forgot hers !)
Unfortunately our stay was cut short due to my sister’s dog being unwell , but we managed to go on a fabulous walk along the river and pub lunch and will definitely go back soon to explore more .

A good size coop supermarket is 5-10 mins walk where you can get pretty much everything you need. We arrived by train and didn't miss the car at all as buses between Wivenhoe, Brightlingsea and Colchester are very frequent. You can walk to Brightlingsea along the river path and catch the bus back. Read more

The details in the cottage have been well considered to make it a lovely environment. We were visiting the University of Essex Colchester campus and it was a five minute drive. Parking on the street outside was easy. There is a great local co-op.
