Children generally find the vaults more absorbing than the Roman artefacts upstairs, which is not a criticism of the artefacts. The castle grounds are walkable for free, dogs are welcome on leads outside the museum, and the site connects easily to the High Street and the Dutch Quarter if you want to add lunch. Highwoods Country Park sits on the northern edge of Colchester and covers 330 acres of woodland and meadow. Entry is free throughout the year.
Over October half term the park runs its Halloween High Jinks programme, which includes a woodland trail, crafts, ghost walks, and hot chocolate. The trail and crafts suit younger children; the ghost walks are aimed at a slightly older age group. Session times vary, so check the park's own programme before you go. In October the main draw is pumpkin picking from the field alongside a corn maze, and the site runs a bar and hot food through the season. It is the kind of afternoon that works when children need something with an outdoor, hands-on element and you do not want to drive far.
Firstsite and The Minories
Colchester has two free art galleries within walking distance of each other, and both are worth knowing about for a wet afternoon. Firstsite is a contemporary art gallery open Tuesday to Sunday, admission free, with family workshops and drop-in making sessions that typically run through the school holidays. The building itself is unusual: a curved gold structure on the edge of the Roman town that tends to prompt questions before you have even got inside. The Minories is a gallery and arts centre in a Georgian townhouse a short walk away, also free, and also generally running drop-in activities over half term. Neither requires advance booking for the gallery itself, though ticketed workshops may need reserving.
A note on timing: Colchester Castle and Colchester Zoo are both quieter midweek than at weekends. If you are staying for a full week and have flexibility, save the zoo for a Tuesday or Wednesday, keep weekends for Wivenhoe or Mersea Island, and treat Highwoods as a low-effort fallback morning when the original plan needs adjusting.
Day Trips Worth Making
Hedingham Castle
Hedingham Castle is approximately 15 miles northwest of Colchester, set around a Norman keep that dates to the 1140s. For October half term 2026 they are running Brightworths School of Magic from 23 to 27 October, a themed multi-activity day aimed at children aged 3 to 14, with sessions covering wand-making, potions, enchanted animal encounters, and spell-casting. A morning slot runs from 10:30 to 1pm; the afternoon slot runs from 1:30 to 4pm. The event is held inside the castle, so the weather is not a factor. Booking in advance is worth doing as it tends to draw a crowd.
The keep is one of the better-preserved Norman keeps in England, and you can go inside during your visit. Mersea Island is ten miles south of Colchester and is worth a day out if the forecast is reasonable. The island is reached by a single tidal causeway called the Strood, which floods at high tide, so checking the tide tables before you travel is not optional.
On a clear October day, the beach at West Mersea is quiet and the walk along the Blackwater Estuary sea wall has the kind of flat grey October light that makes the drive worthwhile.
