Colchester Christmas Lights: 5 Highlights from November to December

Colchester Christmas lights are on the calendar before most people have thought much about December, and the switch-on date is usually the first moment the city feels properly festive, with an illuminated parade from the Mercury Theatre, a High Street filling up from early evening, and the lights themselves on around 7pm. What follows through December is a more varied programme than a single event: a ticketed trail through Castle Park, several markets spread across different weekends, and the kind of quiet atmosphere in the Dutch Quarter that is easy to miss if you are only tracking the set pieces.

The Switch-On Event

The annual Colchester Christmas lights switch-on is the city's biggest single Christmas occasion, and it fills the High Street with enough people that arriving before 5pm is the practical choice if you want a decent position for the parade. Festivities begin around 5pm, the illuminated parade leaves from the Mercury Theatre at 5:30pm, and the lights come on around 7pm. The 2025 event featured approximately 900 parade participants; the 2026 switch-on date had not been confirmed at the time of writing, but Colchester Borough Council typically announces it in early autumn and the Visit Colchester events page will carry the confirmed details.

There is no ticket requirement for the parade or the switch-on.

Enlightened at Castle Park

The most considered piece of the Colchester Christmas lights calendar is the illuminated trail through Castle Park, which runs through December and covers roughly a mile of the park grounds, with lighting installations placed to work with the landscape rather than simply mark a route. It is an evening event, with timed entry from 4:30pm in 15-minute slots, and it works in a quieter register than the switch-on, more deliberate and better suited to a longer evening out than a brief stop.

Pre-booking is required. In 2025 the trail ran from 12 to 28 December, with adult tickets from £12 and children aged 3 to 15 from £8.50; infants under three entered free. Dates and prices for 2026 will appear on the Enlightened Moments website once confirmed.

One practical note: the entrance to the trail is by the war memorial on the High Street side of Castle Park. The other park entrances do not provide access to the trail, which catches visitors out more than you would expect.

Christmas Markets

The Colchester Christmas lights programme includes several markets running through the season at different locations, so knowing which one you are heading to is more useful than assuming there is a single central market.

The InColchester Festive Market stretches along the High Street and into St Nicholas Square, usually on a specific date in early December. In 2025 this was 7 December. It occupies the main city-centre thoroughfare and captures the general festive atmosphere of the High Street.

The Colchester Christmas Evening Farmers Market is different in character: in 2025 it ran on 13 December near the Roman Wall and Balkerne Gate, with local food producers and independent makers rather than the usual seasonal gift mix. If you want to return home with something you cannot buy online, this is the better option.

For anyone with a car and a free morning, the Olivers Plants Christmas Market at Coggeshall Road in Earls Colne runs from mid-November through to Christmas Eve. It is roughly 15 minutes from the city centre and operates on a different scale from the urban markets, with more emphasis on plants, food, and garden gifts.

The Dutch Quarter and Eld Lane

The switch-on and the markets account for the calendar items, but the Dutch Quarter and Eld Lane are where the Colchester Christmas lights atmosphere works most quietly. The Dutch Quarter, a network of older streets off the main centre with a character that is distinctly its own, rewards an hour of wandering without a plan, and the independent shops along Eld Lane are a better December option than the High Street chains for anyone who wants something that does not look as if it was chosen in five minutes.

Neither is an event. They are simply the parts of the city that work well at this time of year, and they fold easily into an evening that already has Enlightened or one of the markets as its anchor.

Staying in Colchester for Christmas

Number 11 and The Round House are both a short walk from the city centre, which puts the Colchester Christmas lights events, including the switch-on parade, the Enlightened trail, and the city-centre markets all within walking distance. Both properties are dog-friendly with free parking outside and self-check-in from 3pm, which is useful when your evening starts at 5pm. Please note that all four Clever Cottages properties have steep stairs, which may not suit guests with limited mobility or young children.

Booking directly means no platform fee and Kate as your direct contact from the first message. Full details and availability are on the property pages linked above. If you are planning a stay around the switch-on or the trail, the city-centre dates in November and December tend to fill early, particularly for weekend nights.
