The Round House, Colchester

The Round House sits on a quiet street in the centre of Colchester, close enough to walk to the castle, the shops and the station. It's a two-bedroom cottage with a bold, colourful interior that sets it apart from the usual rental decor. There's a private carport right outside the front door, so you don't need a permit and your car isn't left out in the weather, and dogs are welcome.

Inside the Round House

Downstairs is open-plan living and dining, with a glass dining table and a kitchen that's properly equipped: cooker, gas hob, microwave, fridge freezer and washing machine. Upstairs there are two double bedrooms, each with its own character, and a dressing room tucked between them that's useful if you're here for more than a night or two. The bathroom has a rainfall shower rather than the usual electric one. There's a smart TV with Netflix, Prime and Disney+, unlimited WiFi, and central heating with the bills already included.

Central Colchester, on foot

Colchester Castle and Castle Park are a short walk away, and so is Eld Lane if you want to poke around the independent shops rather than the high street chains. The Dutch Quarter is worth wandering without a plan. Colchester station gets you to London Liverpool Street in about an hour, or out to the coast at Clacton in around 25 minutes. It's an easy base whether you're here for a couple of nights working in town or a weekend exploring the city.

• Check-in from 3pm, check-out by 11am. Self check-in via key safe, with the code sent before you arrive.
• Covered parking in a private carport, directly outside. No permit required, and it's the only one of our four properties with parking under cover.
• Dogs are welcome. Message us about house rules and the pet fee before you book.
• The property is over two floors and the stairs are steep, as is typical for period cottages in this part of Colchester. It's not a good fit for guests with mobility issues, elderly guests unsteady on their feet, or young children who'd need supervision near the stairs.
